CRIT-TeP Challenging Raciolinguistic Ideologies in Transatlantic Teacher Education and Policy
Funding Agency: The Spencer Foundation Spencer Foundation. 2022-2025. £58,960.
Principal Investigators: Drs. Clara Bauler and Ian Cushing
We examine raciolinguistic ideologies in UK-US teacher education policy and practice, offering a transatlantic perspective on how education policy diffusion has shaped – and continues to shape – the education of pre- and in-service teachers. We create collaborative and dialogic spaces for sharing information and analyzing policy, curricula and discourse.

Ian Cushing, Ph.D.
After a career as a school teacher in London, Ian completed his PhD in Educational Linguistics. His research interests are focused on language, power and inequality in schools. He examines how historical and contemporary language policies and pedagogies are shaped by language ideologies, especially those which work to oppress minoritised speakers. His work also explores how literary texts can be used to challenge language-based stigma and suppression in schools.
